I’m just wondering if my fan-character for Yu-Gi-Oh! Is a sue or not, and if she is, what can I do to change her. There’s some things that bother me, but I want an out-side opinion about this.
Name; Shanna Tanaka
Age ; 16- 18 (Ages through-out series)
Sex; Female
Height; 5’2”
Weight; Average
Appearance; Light reddish-brown hair, pale-skin, purple eyes, golden arm bands on upper-arms and wrists.
Sexuality; Heterosexual
Family; Current Foster family – mother named Mika Kaibara, father named Miko Kaibara, and two male step siblings, Akira Kaibara and Jiro Kaibara.
Relationship Status; Single/crushing on Ryou Bakura (Only for roleplays that have CanonXOC)
Hopes/Dreams; To stay in one foster-home/family for longer than a couple of months,
Fears; Solitude, being alone, losing those close to her,
Character Strengths; Caring, helpful, tries to keep a steady head when others can’t.
Character Flaws; Low self-confidence, unable to do something without second-guessing herself, a perfectionists.
Personality; Always trying to bare a smile, Shanna’s a kind, small girl with a stutter . She always feels like she could do better for others and herself – but she just doesn’t know how to get there. Often moving from family to family, Shanna never really got to know anyone around her age. That being said, whenever she makes a close friend/group of friends, she’ll try to see that whatever they do she’ll see happen – even if the goal is near impossible. Her phobia tends to strike up whenever she’s alone, obviously, and whenever the subject of ‘life beyond high school’. She fears that when she hits 18, she’ll be left alone or abandoned. Because of that, she tends to try to change the subject often, or try to hide.
Whenever she’s alone, she tends to study or read – anything to keep her mind busy and ‘feeling like she’s with a million people’.
Interesting Facts;
• Shanna has Isolophobia – a phobia of being in solitude and alone.
• She has a wicked stutter, possibly due to her lack of self-confidence.
• She has a tendency to blow-up when dealing with people who don’t listen.
• The arm-bands that she wears were from the first foster-family she went into, she never takes them off, mostly due to a comfort issue she has.
Normally, I would complain about Shanna’s appearance right off the bat, but this being an anime fancharacter, anything goes when it comes to eye and hair color. The thing is, if you hadn’t said she was supposed to be a Yu-Gi-Oh character, I would have had no idea. Is she supposed to be a duelist? Related to a duelist, friends with them? What does she have to do with the manga/show? I’m just not seeing it.
As far as her personality goes, it isn’t terrible or anything, it’s just… bland. Nothing really stands out. She’s timid, she stutters, she has no confidence, she’s afraid of being alone, okay, but realistically, that’s only one facet of a personality, not the entirety of it. More depth would be nice.
Her list of fears and flaws have the same issue. Fear of being alone and fear of solitude is the same thing. No confidence and second-guessing oneself is also basically one thing.
While your character isn’t bad, she isn’t that good either. As far as Sue-ness goes, I don’t think she is one, but it could go either way at this point. Nothing really stands out here, and she doesn’t seem to have much to do with canon. She’s missing the depth and personality that really makes a character stand out and be great. There’s nothing really wrong with what’s already here, it’s just that there isn’t enough of it. Don’t be afraid to add some flavor- maybe some weird habits or personality quirks, something!
